Unified API Infrastructure

Both projects are powered by a single API available at busmaps.com/en/developers

How it works: The API includes a host switcher — developers can specify which data source to use:

  • BusMaps host — 6,000+ official GTFS feeds from transit agencies (validated, error-corrected data)
  • WikiRoutes host — crowdsourced data from 25+ developing countries (Russia, Asia, Latin America) where official data is limited

This architecture allows us to maintain one API infrastructure instead of developing two separate systems, while providing complete global transit coverage.

Real-World Example: Routees App

Routees — partner application built with our API, demonstrating intelligent host switching based on geographic location:

  • In CIS countries and developing regions (where WikiRoutes has better coverage) → automatically switches to WikiRoutes API
  • In developed markets (where official GTFS feeds are available) → automatically switches to BusMaps API for precise schedules and real-time data
  • Manual override: Users can change the data source manually in app settings

This intelligent switching provides users with the best available data for their location, with full manual control when needed.
